Heavy Footsteps

Canon EOS REBEL XT 1/400 second F/9.0 ISO 400 75 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Ludovic Roudet from Charenton-le-Pont, France

Great composition, with beautiful framing. Splendid interplay of complementary contrasts between cold and warm tones.

The light is perfect, the diagonals add vibrancy as the foot which raised. The picture hides the face of the old gentleman, which is very polite and discreet. Very good!

@365: " The picture hides the face of the old gentleman, which is very polite and discreet." ____ does it mean that 99% of the street photographers are rude and impolite ? I do not think so ....

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Excellent, the lines work really well with the silhouette.
Remember me a tentative for doing something in the style. Less successful, I must admit.

@Veronique: thank you Veronique !

Ellebelle from Mosquito Town, Netherlands

The man's head is missing, but that's obvious ;-)) I mean something elusive ......
I think I'd cut this image 0,5 cm above the arm holding the walking stick to put more accent on the "heavy footsteps" .........

7 Sep 2013 5:41pm

@Ellebelle: thanks for reply, Ellebelle. I could not even think of this ( missing head ) . I was thinking about some technical issue. i am still not ready to say yes or no to your suggestion, but thank you anyway !

Longroute from Cagliari, Italy

The light and the colours are remarkable here and makes the photo.
If one needed to crop it I'd have cropped it just above the arm. Try the effect.

7 Sep 2013 7:30pm

@Longroute: Light and colors are really pretty in this image but they cannot make the photo. What makes this photo is very delicate, almost invisible detail which is hard to see and feel by those who does not have a keen eye for detail - have a look at his left feet, and then switch to the bottom of his walking cane. Do they touch the ground? No... Almost ...And at the very next second they both will be on the ground .... how harmoniums, how skillful walking with his walking cane.... And what do you think about this instant captured with a camera ? Isn't it fabulous ? His missing or not missing head, how to crop image, yes or no is totally irrelevant in all this story ! I do not care if image is going to be cropped or not, till I feel and love what I see here - LEFT FEET and his CANE :)

maurizio jaya costantino from Trieste, Italy

there's a lightness in heaviness :-)

8 Sep 2013 6:50am

Longroute from Cagliari, Italy

Yes, I had seen that detail but I had taken it for granted. Of course the photo is about the pace of this old man, even a blind person would see this. What I meant is that without the contrast with the lovely light and colour in the side-walk the silhouette of the legs and cane would not have been so effective. Not always you find at once the right words to comment. But my opinion is that light is all in a photo, even when the main subject is a person. Then I don't agree that cropping is irrelevant in this story or in any other one. (:-)
If you try to crop it the way I said (you only need to lower down the photo here using the cursor) you will see that the detail you mention will be highlighted much better.

Veronique from France-and-, Switzerland

Oh yes ! that it is !!!(your explanation to longroute) I couldn't make the connection between the stick and the foot and the impression of heaviness. I've got it now :-)

9 Sep 2013 6:08pm

@Veronique: so you liked colors and light too ? thx for the other look at this image .
