The Luggage of Life

Posted by
Mariana Maoduš (Waterloo, Canada) on 17 November 2011 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

It was a Wedding Photographing in a Park. To be honest it was a first time I saw such a richness of everything,
starting with suits, dresses ... etc !
Too many posing, false smiles and from all that this luggage took my attention and made me think if this marriage is going to be as sweet and lovely as a whole ceremony or just as any other for which I still remember one of the saying from Yugoslavian culture :
"a barrel of shit with whipping cream on the top "

BTW ... does anyone know what is going on with Am3 Server ?
It is terribly slow in a last three days, during the day especially !

Canon EOS REBEL XT 1/500 second F/10.0 ISO 200 210 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

It's a heavy luggage for her or for anybody.

strong B&W

Marco Carbocci from Paris/Bruxelles, Belgium

17 Nov 2011 10:14am

Isidro from Barcelona, Spain

great composition and lovely contrast!

j'aime beaucoup cette image !
la fillette qui semble plus intense se détache au premier plan avec une grande netteté, alors que l'homme à la canne semble s'éloigner et se diluer légèrement dans la tonalité grise du fond . superbement fait !

Lovely shot -- could almost be a "Kodak moment" from the 1960's. The glove and cane on the adult figure first made me think about a funeral, perhaps a military one. I'm glad it was a happier time.

Phil David Morris 2011 from Saskatoon,, Canada

I love your old saying with whipping cream and that is my view of photographing
weddings, which I take is something you don't like also. Sometimes there is a
gem in the rough, here something as simple as an old suitcase in the mix has
provided a "diamond" in the form of this adorable photo.

17 Nov 2011 4:22pm

Rick from Toronto, Canada

What a fantastic saying! We are understandably a bit cynical about marriage in a world where it fails about half the time. I wish them all LUCK, though. Live and Love as if each day is the last; savour it all. Beautiful photo, Mariana. You always know where to look in each scene. You have that rare eye that is always a joy and inspiration to behold through your posts here. I celebrate this little "first birthday" on Aminus with a special smile for how great your work is. (yeah, it is very slow here lately; makes me lose time and patience for commenting, but I will keep trying)

The suitcase is bigger than her because she has to had more of her life into it.

A unique image very rich in interpretations. Superb capture and quality in the photograph. Specially the light and the contrast. I have been noticing too the sluggish speed in the connection.

let's be optimistic on such a day, m., and wish them all the best! (the gentleman's suit could have been worn to a funeral, too, on the other hand ...) - but the little girl is sweet in her pretty dress ...

gorgeous little girl and you truly have a photographers eye for "seeing" the real situation and capturing it!

18 Nov 2011 2:35am

karla from Omaha, United States

Good capture of the moment for this little one. Hope she is not already thinking that weddings only mean extra baggage! There is so much more. :) Yes, from here in the midwest US Am3 has been sporadically slow as cold molasses. There were several days last week and the week before that I could not connect at all. On other days the Euro sites seemed very slow. Evenings were ok, it seemed worse during the day. Now it seems to be back to normal. Hopefully.

18 Nov 2011 3:30am

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

The little girl leaps off my screen in this wondrous B&W. I've noticed the same am3 sluggishness but have no clue. At least it is staying up this time. Last time it acted up, it was out for a day or so here.

I like the life and historic feeling the old trunk brings to the whole scene. Well, actually, the whole scene is about that bag. Nice shot, i like it.

Excellent image and a fantastic choice of images from the wedding - I really don't like those, right up there with funerals. This is one of those ageless images - could have been taken 50 years ago or yesterday.
I love that saying! Lol! David's my 4th husband! Guess I finally found a barrel with enough whip cream to make the shit easier to take! ;-)
