"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

apodromos from chalkida, Greece

I like the photograph ..... this scape .....reminds me things from my childhood....what remains, weathered and abandoned, brings up my nostalgia....

14 Oct 2011 6:42am

@apodromos: it is so interesting to read your comment and see we both share the same feelings. this is a place in Yugoslavia, close to Belgrade, where my grandma used to live, a place that was heavily bombarded by NATO !

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

Beautifully done in monochrome, there is so much character in these old houses, I would be interesting to know the stories they could tell of the families who lived there.

Such a nice shot with this black figure on the white wall, very clever.

@DowsherVision: it was super timing in our commenting :)

J.R. from Ginowan, Japan

Some memories best left behind, but that's often very hard to do. For myself I don't miss the past I'm only 66 and the future still has much in store.

The electrical and telecommunication lines highlight unattainable image for solitude.

14 Oct 2011 12:20pm

Linda from Carmarthenshire, United Kingdom

The shadow looks like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, I love the house in its state, its a sad picture to me :-)

14 Oct 2011 12:54pm

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

A composition at first glance had me awe-struck. I first saw a man who came home (from work perhaps?) to find his home in ruins. And then to read your responses to some of the comments, it doesn't seem too far from reality. But your title rings true with many when it comes to what their home means to them, regardless of its condition. I love the "anonymity" of the man in silhouette.

14 Oct 2011 2:13pm

Sterre from Vianen, Netherlands

This black and white composition is a jewel.
Great work.

14 Oct 2011 2:25pm

Nicou from Sion, Switzerland

Très belle iamge de cette vielle maison avec le personnage, superbe

14 Oct 2011 3:13pm

Rick from Toronto, Canada

A powerful and stark image, and I read your replies about NATO bombing and can only shake my head at such a stupid world sometimes. It must hurt to see a family home reduced to "target status" through ineptitude and weaponry. The silhouette figure adds such a haunting power...

14 Oct 2011 3:14pm

Megha from Mumbai, India

Very nice composition!! Love the human element in the pic

14 Oct 2011 3:15pm

Z from Shanghai, China

Such a high contrast b&w makes some very sad atmosphere...Nice composition with the lonely black figure and the abandoned house together

14 Oct 2011 3:37pm

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

The paint peels, only one electrical line goes into the back of the house, perhaps there was happiness and love one day, but then disaster strikes some how, some way (I only just now read your notes above = so I guess I guessed right, sort of). This is a touching and evocative scene Mariana...I can now see why even more...

14 Oct 2011 3:41pm

Nilla´s photo shoots from Östergötland, Sweden

sad story.
Like the man you´ve captured in front of this ruin it gives the photo "life"

14 Oct 2011 4:36pm

@Nilla´s photo shoots: yes, he gave the photo "life" and even the stronger feel of "death" of this place ! Not so many young people remained in this place ! thx Nilla :)

Ddo from Verdun, France

Je ne trouve pas ta prise triste malgré la décrépitude des lieux, je trouve que le personnage qui se découpe sur le mur comme une silhouette de papier lui donne vie et un aspect de conte irréel, j'aime.

14 Oct 2011 4:44pm

14 Oct 2011 8:55pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

That house has served someone, perhaps this man, well for many years. It's not the newest nor fanciest but, it has character and it's home. A truly great B&W presentation.

14 Oct 2011 9:27pm

James Read from Chesterfield, United Kingdom

This reminds me so much of an image made by Andre Kertesz in 1914, I had to look in his 'Lifetime of Photography' to see it, memory plays tricks but the images though different are equally as strong.

I'd not looked at your images Mariana and have been through lots of them just now, I came to the opinion in July this year as I began my journey into street photography that it is the 'cameras own art' no other medium can emulate its unposed immediacy. Your photographs Mariana prove that assumption beyond doubt.

14 Oct 2011 9:31pm

@James Read: thanks a lot James. I appreciate your comment !

morgan from canyon Country, United States

Very great eye,Mariana, this is superb.

14 Oct 2011 9:33pm

15 Oct 2011 2:58pm

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

The gray sky, the contrast and the solitary figure is very emotional, knowing that his place was a close and an important one in your life.

15 Oct 2011 4:20pm

Isidro from Barcelona, Spain

excelente composición, me encanta la silueta!!

15 Oct 2011 6:08pm

Laurie from Prescott, United States

Wonderful shot of this poor cottage, Mariana! I really like the tones of this - matches the gloominess and neglect of this little place. A person could feel very bad about living in such a humble abode unless they saw some without even this! Beautiful!

15 Oct 2011 6:36pm

taolechat from potenza, Italy

belle composition
cette silhouette tres découpée est étrange, on pense a une girouette qui serait tombée du toit
