They Stepped On Her

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Kala from United States

She has a great 'look' about her. Something is bothering her, or has she seen someone she knows? That is the beauty in photographs like this....the viewer can interpret in a number of different ways.

@Ralf Kesper: well, what I said in a title , I really mean - she has been stepped on and pushed down many, many times in her life ... not by these legs of course :) thx !

klausz from Kufstein, Austria

she looks like, that the life "stepped on her", that she´s definitely not living on the sunny side of life
and lost and captivate in this so quick modern world, searching for an exit, but find no way out!
... no more words ... simply fantastic!

6 Oct 2011 11:24am

@klausz: This is exactly what I think of this poor woman whenever see her in town. This moment I catch when she was sitting on the pavement , surrounded by these legs. It was a perfect moment and situation to tell a bit more of her ! many thx Klaus !

My eye wanders to the nice pair legs behind her head...and naughty thoughts ; ] best…jf

6 Oct 2011 1:39pm

Rick from Toronto, Canada

You captured two meanings in one fine shot; the literal stepping on of legs surrounding her, and that which is visible in her face... that life has metaphorically stepped on her. Her expression is amazing, rather inscrutable. Another very fine street frame!

6 Oct 2011 1:53pm

@Rick: actually there is only one meaning of my title and this image - Life is too Rough on Her! Thanks for this fine comment , Rick ;)

This is an amazing portrait, I'm sure I've seen her before and she always looks so sad. Do you ever approach the people in your portraits and ask about who they really are? I've always wondered about how they truely see the world but how do you really ask.
