The Emptied Container

Posted by
Mariana Maoduš (Waterloo, Canada) on 5 July 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Right after the container was emptied, a man is rushing to check out what's there....btw. A man with container works for the Grocery/ Bakery store !
I hope these few words can help to understand this image better ...

Canon EOS REBEL XT 1/500 second F/10.0 ISO 200 75 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

Michael Skorulski from Toronto, Canada

A sad life indeed.

5 Jul 2011 1:12pm

@Michael Skorulski: I am glad you feel this image, Michael. It was more than sad to me when I spotted this man hiding and monitoring the other man who was going to empty this container. When he felt sure nobody would see him, he almost run to this place and started rumbling through the rubbish !

Melocoton from Salamanca, Spain

I can only tell you that Marian is fantastic, a unique composition and very difficult to empty the center of the image, very complicated
something reserved for the few photographers, *****

Great composition ! It looks like a crime scene ...

5 Jul 2011 3:46pm

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Where I work we have "dumpster divers" (what a cruel term that can be) who rummage through the many trash disposal bins that are stored outside the buildings. Most of them climb right inside and are looking for something to eat. This strong image reminds me of those poor hungry people who live desperate lives, and the compo here is amazing for showing the gap between the two men above as they have different realities. The wall makes for a great symbolic "inner frame", and gives me a sense of this man's confined world and way of life. I was feeling all of this as I typed, scrolled back for a second look and saw your reply above... sure would have been funny if I felt and typed all of this and it was completely off-base! Thanks for another great image to make us think.

5 Jul 2011 4:01pm

@Rick: Yes, this is the same story as this image tells us ! Thx for this new slang ( ?) - dumpsters divers ! Did not know it , and now can use for other images with the same theme ;) [ with my apology to those ]

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

Impeccable construction of characters in the picture, although it is clear that this was done almost intuitively. In addition, both characters are active heroes of a little history. Wonderful job!

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

Many would probably be amazed at what is thrown thing for sure, your images are certainly not "throw aways"....!

5 Jul 2011 7:27pm

@Denny Jump Photo: miserable is anyone who comes into situation to search through what was thrown away ....I am not sure if I understood your comment , especially this part of my images ... thx anyway for saying hello !

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

This photo makes a very powerful statement. It is a sad commentary on how some people have to live. Great capture and wonderful processing!

What I meant was that I think your images are always magnificent! They are things that we should keep and not discard because they are so fantastic! ;-)

5 Jul 2011 8:16pm

@Denny Jump Photo: I would never use "not thrown aways " as a synonym of "magnificent", Denny !

Oscar from BCN, Spain

Super! is a HDR in B&W?

5 Jul 2011 8:33pm

@Oscar: once again I really dislike HDR :) or I do not know how to use it properly :)

foto forte from Phoenix, United States

Again, awesome framing, Mariana and very powerful. You know, I had a friend who had a friend that used to do the same thing....dumpster diving. But he did it because he actually hated the waste that stores produced and contended that he could find a lot of things that were still good. I don't think that is the case with your man here, but it is interesting to me that this man appears to be doing this to survive and I know someone who's doing it for completely different reasons. Funny, and sad, too, how the world works. Great job with this one:)

5 Jul 2011 8:35pm

@foto forte: that is really rare situation, Jen . In fact , first time I hear the story like this one . This man I take picture of was very weird to me ... With gloves, with shorts and rainy dirty jacket , and his legs were so dirty, even some dry blood I saw on them ... I was not sure if he was mentally ok ... I moved quickly away; very often I am afraid of these type of people. Thanks Jen !

@Frida: ha ha .. you are sweet ;) no, i do not want you to be a fly , but I would like to take a pretty portrait of you :)

Yes, your words make crystal clear what we are seeing. The man is rushing to be first to see what might be good to eat. A superb shot.

I don't want to see the scene with my eyes. Maybe I have to learn this is the real life.

Just read your response to my post...your sighting of this man sounds a little scary! Be careful!:) Funny, my mom says that to me all the time. If you get a chance to answer this, can I ask where you go to take a lot of your images? I'm sure everywhere but some of the people you photograph seem from a harder side of life, so I am curious. I would love to do that where I live but I find myself quite nervous about it. Anyways, hope you are having a good day:)

7 Jul 2011 7:29pm

@foto forte: My sons are telling me very often - mom , you will get a broken nose one day :) I do not care if I get , nothing can stop me taking pictures of what I like ! Only once I was threatened to get killed by one homeless, who is drunk all the time . He is not interesting to me at all and I do not know why he is yelling at me shouting - put this f... camera down . Almost all my portraits and street images are taken in Waterloo-Kitchener ( 2 little cities connected , without border :))) I love walking and each time I am with camera ! Each time I see something new ! Or some new face , interesting to me . Thanks Jen .

karla from Omaha, United States

The frame shows the divide that I saw before reading your narrative. There is that wiggly line between the two men. One man is employed, looks like he is alive and in good humor. The other....a darkness there that is felt though not quite understood. Amazing image!

Le temps s'arrête, mais les trajectoires ne se rencontrent pas... J'ai appris quelque chose en cherchant sur le web, ce que veut dire BTW ...
Une photo qui pourrait être le début d'un film ou d'un roman...
Bon dimanche.
