"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Z from Shanghai, China

Unique view and processing of the Mosque! Love the grey and the spot black.

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Tremendous impact in both this framing and the surreal sight of a war-marked city and something new and untouched in its midst. This is a haunting shot, and the human figure makes it so powerful as well. Great work, Mariana.

29 Jun 2011 12:50pm

Pascale. from La Bonneville sur Iton, France

it's strange to see the mosque so near of the buildings. But the picture has an incredible softness due to the mist, and with the lonely person in black, the mood is almost mysterious.Superb!

29 Jun 2011 12:55pm

@Pascale.: nothing is strange in Sarajevo any longer ... Buildings and houses are still destroyed as they were 16 years ago, but 300 new mosques were built in a last few years .... religion becomes so important in this city of poverty!

Amanda from Jersey City, United States

Great capture of the foggy scene. It's amazing how having one person in the shot, even if they are only a small portion of the overall image, can completely transform the scene.

29 Jun 2011 1:02pm

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

This image is so very gripping and dramatic and your message to Phil (I hope you will forgive me for reading it) is even more terrifying and makes me understand even more....I wish you peace Mariana!

29 Jun 2011 1:05pm

@Denny Jump Photo: you mean to Rick ? No problem Denny ! Sometimes images do not say what a photographer feel and a few words are needed to viewers to get better a certain image !

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Dear Mariana : Your reply is so powerful and sad. You have lived a horror story and survived experiences that for most people would be in a book or movie or nightmare. There are no useful words to respond with, really, but thank you for sharing that and I am glad that Canada is a country that welcomes others. This is why I proudly call you "sister Canada" sometimes. *hug*

29 Jun 2011 1:18pm

@Rick: I never told you before but now will tell you how great I felt when first time I read you with this lovely - sister Canada :) I have no brother or sister here, and these words sounds so honest and so warm to me . Many thanks Rick ;)

Jason Politte from Conway, AR, United States

@Ken: come more often on my page and you will get used to my images without surprise ;) ha ha

klausZ from Kufstein, Austria

this buildings seem so unreal, and i´m really wondering that you captured this in sarajevo!
i´m wondering cause the as former known country "jugoslavia" is a neighbouring country to austria, so we have much noticed about the war in the early 90ths! also many people in my sourrounding. living in austria for so many years, have their roots there ans so they share their stories about their relatives, families, friends
it was also a shocking experience to have this war right before your "house"
this photo reflected for me the absurdity of this war and all the wounds which are still not healed!
great mood and the hope, that the history will never repeat again! i also read your reply to rick and was very impressed too! thx for sharing your story! god bless you!

29 Jun 2011 1:37pm

@klausZ: God bless you too , Klauz ! Very touching comment and thoughts ! Many thanks !

Ansie from Paarl, South Africa

Roland from Manila, Philippines

beautiful picture Mariana! the mist does have a compelling effect to picture and the story behind it...your story did struck me...i wish war never happens again...anywhere...(sadly, still happens around us)...thank you for sharing this...i wish you continued peace...

29 Jun 2011 2:44pm

@Roland: very kind of you , Roland :) The same to you ;)

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

Impressive to see the yet to heal scars of the war in those buildings. The fog helps to create a more dramatic atmosphere for this B&W. Great image.

29 Jun 2011 2:59pm

RonnyVee from Tielt, Belgium

I hope that Sarajevo again becomes what it used to be,Mariana.
I can't even imagine what the war was like for you and your familie and friends. It's a shame that so many innocents must die...
But i guess it's a good thing that you can talk about it and that you can share your (quality) pictures with us!

29 Jun 2011 3:09pm

@RonnyVee: I wish the same Ronny, but no, Sarajevo will never be the same city ... I am positive ! It is hard to talk and even process all these pictures I took in January when was there for the first time since escaped from there ... Memories are more than painful ...

Sam from Chennai, India

Fantastic image. Very powerful and sad. Old wounds and new Mosque. And A new hope ... :)

29 Jun 2011 3:52pm

franz from Baden, Austria

a powerful image, sad and hopeful at the same time, and a terrific and horrible and wonderful story to go with it. you're very courageous to confront your own past like this, mariana! not many could do this, and i commend you for it and for the seemingly "cool" attitude your pictures seem to demonstrate (though i know they are far from cool ...)!

29 Jun 2011 6:47pm

François Jouve from Grasse, France

Snow or sand ? Who knows... Very nice picture. I like the atmosphere.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Even in the mist, we can see the scars caused by indiscriminate shelling. It's so nice to see the new mosque which must bring hope to the people there. The woman in black really makes this image.
