"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

Chris Pereira from San Jose, CA, United States

wow, what a powerful shot, that looks like no place for a mother and her baby. Is the building abandoned?

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

In this circumstance, it looks as if this woman is right to hold on tightly to her child.
Such a busy setting, and evidence of so much that has happened here, even if it is now in the past.

Tede from Aubenas 07, France

This place appears to contrast with the lifeless life reborn in the arms of his mother. Magnificent shot. Mariana good day.

Very powerful image, and aptly titled. You have managed to tell a story that needs to be told. A great photo can evoke empathy and this one does just that.

RonnyVee from Tielt, Belgium

A marvelous shot, Mariana! I've been in Croatia en Slovenia a couple of times ,and this country's are just beautiful. Although I've never been much deeper than let's say Plitvicka ,there were houses and churches with war-damage.
I hope to go back some day, and visit more states in the Balkan.

3 Jun 2011 1:34pm

@RonnyVee: Hi Ronny . I am so glad to read you were visiting ex-Yugoslavia. Yes, it was very beautiful country. Slovenia is like a little Austria, Croatia with Adriatic coast ... just a perfect for visits or even live there ! Next time you go there I hope you will visit Sarajevo . While I was there I met one Italian, who was for the very first time there and I was surprised when he said - he was falling in love with Sarajevo . All I told him was - you would be so sorry for this city if ever visited it before war ! Thanks !

Rick from Toronto, Canada

I haven't read any of the comments but can basically guarantee the word "power" is in full use. This is packed full of it, Mariana. The tenderness and strength of this mother is so poignant in contrast to the neglected building which has suffered the scarring of a violent era that is summarized in this one potent image.

3 Jun 2011 1:59pm

@Rick: thanks Rick. Super weekend to you too . Hopefully - Sunny !!!!!

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

This is a WONDERFUL image! I love the subdued old building, and the vibrant young woman against it shielding her infant! This says so much, like maybe she is trying to shield her child from not only the Winter cold, but to shield her from a way of life.....Such a fantastic, strong, narrative here!

3 Jun 2011 2:11pm

Harry from United States

Nice urban grunge shot. The young mother is an interesting counterpoint to the dilapidated surroundings.

Great image, Mariana. The deserted, rough looking street and building with the mom and infant in the foreground. It gives the feeling of a hard life, one of much struggle and heartache. You captured that feeling very well in this photo.
