She Sings for Money

Canon EOS REBEL XT 1/60 second F/4.5 ISO 400 75 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Ddo from Verdun, France

Elle a l'air frigorifiée la pauvre. Chanteuse de rue par nécessité semble t il. Elle ne manque pas de courage pour gagner ses quelques sous...

30 Mar 2011 5:12am

Tede from Aubenas 07, France

Indifference despite their bags full passersby do not even look. A beautiful picture of the reality of our world. Good day.

30 Mar 2011 5:16am

Kenny from Eastsound, United States

The picture stirs curiosity in the viewer, like many of your photos, and makes you want to know more. Very nice.

30 Mar 2011 5:31am

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

Touching, Mariana - a beautiful exposure for a very compelling street scene.

30 Mar 2011 5:36am

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

I'm wondering how she can even project her voice out of that curled and heavily wrapped figure.
In any case, no one seems to be waiting for her song. :-(

30 Mar 2011 5:42am

JacklineG from Béarn, France

Elle fait peine à voir recroquevillée dans son coin, et personne n'a l'air de prêter attention à ses chansons ! Bonne journée Mariana

30 Mar 2011 5:58am

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Another potent street capture, Mariana, with the singing woman isolated within the image as the world rushes past. There is a wonderful richness in this mono, smooth and dark and beautifully framed.

30 Mar 2011 6:01am

Tinx from Kuressaare, Estonia

Very good shot!

30 Mar 2011 6:08am

Excellent composition and exploitation of the light: we see only her...and the bags.

30 Mar 2011 6:34am

Shaahin Bahremand from Tehran, Iran

very good. i don't know what to say!

30 Mar 2011 6:37am

@Shaahin Bahremand: you said it is very good ;) thx :)

Sitting there in the cold, she remembers me of the tale "The Little Match-Seller" by Hans Christian Andersen. I hope she will not share her fate; life is hard for too many people.

30 Mar 2011 6:52am

@KENT KB: thanks for this reminder ;)

Suzanne from Melbourne, Australia

i am constantly reminded how lucky Australians are......unemplyment, disability and old age pensions.
Unfortunately many countries are without such safety nets.......:))

30 Mar 2011 7:08am

@Suzanne: similar is here in Canada. shot is from Sarajevo, one poor and destroyed Bosnia !

Fraucha from БІЛА ЦЕРКВА, Ukraine

El pare from Prepirineu, Andorra

... and people is going pass by without stopping. A good daily life view in the city

30 Mar 2011 9:05am

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

I like the way you have framed the singer between the cold concrete pillars - with your point of view looking down the busy street. The stream of people moving along the street seems indifferent to the singer. The mood of isolation is even more powerful in B&W.

30 Mar 2011 9:20am

@Stephen: a lot of beggars on the streets of Sarajevo ... seems it is hard to give some change to each of them ... i know very well how much money I spent for them ..

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

How desperately sad

30 Mar 2011 9:22am

Marie LC from Entre montagnes et Bretagne, France

Your photos are always of a big realism and I admire them because I do not absolutely know how to photograph people in the street

30 Mar 2011 9:24am

@Marie LC: the same with me - i do not know how to take pictures of nature ... I like more nature in real than on pictures :)

Mhelene from Paris, France

Sadly the same in all big towns ! Great capture !

30 Mar 2011 9:33am

Sam from Chennai, India

Must be the most heart-touching title I've read . . makes me feel I should go out today and do something useful just because I can. Powerful stuff, Mariana.

30 Mar 2011 10:30am

J.R. from Ginowan, Japan

Too easy to walk by people by her and never see them, or just not look and hope they'll go away. Good Capture. I hope some kind souls blessed her this day.

30 Mar 2011 10:36am

@J.R.: i wished the same :) thanks JR

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Alone in a crowd, a sad commentary about our society today! Marginalized and separated from the rest of the society, forced to occupy the fringes and edges. Material deprivation is the most common result of marginalization, when looking at how unfairly material resources (such as food and shelter) are dispersed in society. Well seen and captured Mariana! ;-)

30 Mar 2011 1:02pm

Hi, Mariana. An unfortunately traditional street scene. All the people pass her by without looking at her.
Have a nice day,

30 Mar 2011 1:35pm

PixeLuz from Vitória, Brazil

A big difference with Brazil: here beggars come to you and ask directly for money... And they never sing.

30 Mar 2011 1:44pm

Franz from Baden, Austria

so many people passing by without taking notice, pretending they don't see or have no time! what have we come to as we see more and more poor souls begging in the streets, even of the "rich" countries?!?

30 Mar 2011 1:48pm

thami from Morocco

Une scène de rue intéressante avec cette femme assise au seuil de la porte et qui chante pour gagner sa vie! Dommage que l'on ne puisse pas entendre sa voix !

You realy make a great shot here lady!!
Love it ;-))

30 Mar 2011 5:08pm

Thomas from Paris, France

Cette image est triste mais belle. C'est triste car elle reflète une réalité quotidienne, mais cette photo est belle par la qualifié du traitement N&B et par le réalisme qu'elle dégage.

30 Mar 2011 6:09pm

@Thomas: thx Thomas .

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Dramatic shot, a good social document

And the life happens, around it, sat waiting for a help, of this company,
It contradiction fills, waiting for an opportunity, we all are a part of she.

Amazing B&W

30 Mar 2011 7:45pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

I admire this lady for offering something of value for the money she gets. This is so unlike many people in her situation who simply want money. An excellent shot of this nice area of the city that this lady seems to be on the fringes of.

30 Mar 2011 7:52pm

RBL from Oxford, United States

Great capture of so many people's struggles, it's sad to see that no one is paying her any attention. Powerful b/w photo!

This just makes me think about how much more fortunate some of us are, that we do not have to beg for a daily crust. Superb shot.

31 Mar 2011 2:30am

Williams from East LaHave, Nova Scotia, Canada

She looks so terribly alone, her song must be a sad one. I really like the light & focus on the woman & the area where she sits. The way it becomes darker & less focused moving away from her seems to intensify her isolation. Really fine.

31 Mar 2011 3:06am

larans from Lund, Sweden

There are so many of them, we meet them everywhere, even in my small hometown in Sweden nowadays.
Looks like they are coming from the former East, and that it is organized.
Life tragedys anyway. And an important documentation!

31 Mar 2011 7:02am

L'explorateur from Vancouver, Canada

It's sad. Some of your images start a sequence of thoughts in my head and sometimes the bottom line is just "it's sad". And it's real.
