Nothing But a Memory

Canon EOS REBEL XT 1/400 second F/9.0 ISO 400 75 mm

*

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

sunstone_maria from California, United States

great capture of the place. reminds me of my corner of the world I was born Krakow, Poland. Was it taken somewhere in Europe?

1 Mar 2011 3:25pm

@sunstone_maria: all these pictures in a last week are pictures from Sarajevo ( ex-Yugoslavia), a city where I was born and lived till war happened there . Then, I found another home here in Canada. Last month it was my first visit of my hometown after 16 years !

yiannis krikis from thessaloniki, Greece

great location and lighting, but the sest is the smile at the old woman's face

1 Mar 2011 3:32pm

Amanda from Jersey City, United States

Now THAT'S a pigeon party! And this interesting woman going about her business...completely unaffected by the swarm around her.

1 Mar 2011 3:33pm

@Amanda: i would not say so - just take a look at her lovely smile. she enjoyed this moment so much :)

sunstone_maria from California, United States

Now I understand why those places are so familiar to me. I wonder how you felt after visiting your country 16 years later. I love music of Goran Bregović and listen to it almost daily - he recently announced he is returning to Sarajevo. Are you planning to return to your place of origin?

1 Mar 2011 3:39pm

@sunstone_maria: I love Bregovic too, and legendary Bijelo Dugme, with all singers the group had during their existence ! No, I would never go back to live in Sarajevo ! This is a totally different city, with different people living now there. I even could not have waited to come back home. I got sick of the constant scenes of terrible poverty and miserable life over there. That is not a city I loved and carried in my heart all these years , being out of it . Now, all I feel for it is an enormous sorrow and nothing else .

El pare from Prepirineu, Andorra

It will be a disaster the day in which even we have no memory. Good combination of new and old life in this pic.

A detail-packed and wonderful image. The elderly woman has such a great face; someone to sit and talk with, learn from. I love how the different generations share this scene, and the large gathering of pigeons is such a globally iconic visual as well. So much here, to read like a book...

Reading your reply to 'sunshine_maria'; It must have been exciting but ultimately disappointing to return to your homeland. There have been a number of excellant films over the last 20 years documenting the problems in this area. All of them bring home, even to someone who has not visited the region, the terrible suffering that has taken place.
I now understand the meaning behind the title of these photos. However, no one can take away your memories from 16 years ago.

I remember starting my first job over 30 years ago. We were developiong Radar systems for the Yugoslavia Military. My work colleage, who visited the area extensively due to the job, said that the whole country would collapse as soon as Tito died. I did not take any notice of him at the time but he was certainly correct.

1 Mar 2011 8:45pm

@Philip: Thx Phillip for your respect and understanding. Yes, I watched many of films about happenings in ex-Yugoslavia from period 1992-96, but none that I watched could be a real picture of the situation. One needed to be there and experience all that tragedy to be able to create a good and true film. My memories will never die , and my visit of Sarajevo was a part of my recovery of sudden homesickness and nostalgia. Well, at least I saw my family after so many years, and all these new impression about some 'new Sarajevo' I will document through my pictures and try to forget it as soon as possible ...Thx again ;)

Memories can be good or bad; pleasant memories can be beautiful but for many of our older souls who end up in rest or nursing homes they are haunted by memories past, but the expression on her face maybe her memories were more pleasant. Great capture

sunstone_maria from California, United States

Mariana - I hope one day you will visit this beautiful country and you will see hope and future and optimism in people's hearts. I do not know for how long you have stayed there but from my experience I know the first two weeks are hard whenever I visit my country - I can't stand the ignorance of rich people, poverty of small and injustice everywhere. I realized one thing - the longer I stay there, the more I understand and get used to the reality and at the same time I find the same old land I used to grow up.

I am writing this post while listening to my favorite "Ederlezi" music. fantastic absolutely fantastic and inspiring music. and it brings some memories to me as a teenager I followed all his concerts and did not miss a single Emir Kusturica’s movie .. I have huge love for the creative spirit of Yugoslavia!
