sensory loss after 80 ?!

Canon PowerShot SX100 IS 1/320 second F/4.0 ISO 100 47 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Richard T from Leicester, United Kingdom

Great image in the silvery twilight years. She needs a cushion to see over the wheel. Sensory loss? ... Well I'm way under 80 ... well a bit under and I'm losing it already ;-)

20 Sep 2010 5:16am

@Richard T: think about taking a bus then .... ha ha :)

Isidro from Barcelona, Spain

genial este retrato en b/n, me gusta como te esta mirando la señora conductora, muy bien vista, saludos!!

20 Sep 2010 5:23am

✿ Anina ✿ from Auckland, New Zealand

I think I'm loosing mine already :) A wonderful shot, Mariana. I like the tones and composition a lot. Nana can see hardly over the steering wheel - it's so cute!

20 Sep 2010 5:38am

@✿ Anina ✿: no, do not say that :)) just have a lit bit better concentration ;)

Suzanne from Melbourne, Australia

another really interesting comp...the way that the steering wheel disects her face, the lines of the element on the rear window. All enhanced by being in B&W...well done

20 Sep 2010 5:51am

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

I know this is controversial...but here we go...My Dad was banned from driving by his Doctor when he was 72..the doctor thought he had lost reaction time. I agree! I think that it should be compulsory to have a driving test every 5 years after 65. My Dad didn't know how dangerous he was-I'm just pleased that he didn't spend his last years in jail having killed a kid that he didn't see, or react to quickly enough. Rant over!
What a great shot, and guess what, it got me thinking!!!

20 Sep 2010 6:01am

@CElliottUK: Thx for sharing your story :) I am glad too your dad does not drive any longer :) I recently had an accident with one old man who changed the lane and hit me . Poor man , he was shivering .. I was afraid he will get a heart attack !

Nina from Haute Loire, France

Probably ... But I think there are fewer accidents caused by elderly people as young as a result of drugs, then

20 Sep 2010 6:30am

Zing from Hamilton, New Zealand

It's hard to see the road driving like that, great capture though!

20 Sep 2010 6:31am

Tede from Aubenas 07, France

My father is 87 years old and he drives his car very well, he has never had an accident! Superb portrait but the lady should put a pillow because she does not really see the road:)) Nice day.

An excellent composition Mariana!. Attractive composition with rhythmic lines of the bridge and alternating between water and sand. The light is beautifully handled. A delicious and delicate image! Best regards, Adela

20 Sep 2010 12:35pm

@JJ: the same with me . i cannot believe they still drive , and what are gorgeous faces while they are driving . I started my collection of these old kids :))

larry from somewhere in, Singapore

Beautiful! Reminds me of the show where an old lady teaches a boy how to drive. Now if only I can remember the title.

20 Sep 2010 12:36pm

@larry: thx Larry ! Try to remember ;) You know, all these old people still driving look like some characters from some films ;)

Ekios from une des trois iles du salut, Guyana

Nice shot, but god she scares me .. :p

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

20 Sep 2010 12:53pm

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

ROFL...this just proves my point! Driving is a priviledge not a right! Just like the amusement parks,,,,if you are not taller than the bar you don't get to go on the ride!!! Well seen and captured Mariana! ;-))

20 Sep 2010 12:57pm

Tamara from Aarschot, Belgium

Oh dear... no comment ;) Your portrait is very well taken Mariana... but did she mention you ? I'm not that sure :))) Have a great day !

20 Sep 2010 3:09pm

Larry Lefever from Lititz, United States

This is too funny! She looks like such a sweet little thing. Short drivers truly amaze me ... they only see half of the world through the windshield, and that half happens to be sky. :)

20 Sep 2010 3:12pm

@Larry Lefever: o, no :) Ok, heaven maybe :)

danou-yepa from Nice, France

20 Sep 2010 3:32pm

@Bettina: you mean on the streets or on the screen, Internet ? Thanks !

Susan from Sausalito, United States

The front mirror is shocking in this photograph...perhaps because it seems so large compared to the small woman... She is so tiny and mighty at the same time.

20 Sep 2010 3:33pm

Tamara from Aarschot, Belgium

I meant "did she saw you"... sorry for the mistake, English is only my third language ;)

20 Sep 2010 3:41pm

@Tamara: yes, she saw me . I was about leaving a parking , when she was parking her car ! So, I took this picture through double glass, my windshield, her windshield.. I waited for her to get off her car and talked to her . She is gorgeous . I gave her a lot of compliments :))

I immediately started laughing when I saw this woman barely able to see over the wheel! I'm glad to read she was parked when you took this image--I wouldn't want you taking a risk of walking in front of her moving car!! :)

21 Sep 2010 3:17am

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

I mean driving in my car, looking into my rear view mirror and seeing this half submerged shrunken old person, clutching the wheel like a child. I mean, looking ahead at an incredibly slow driver and seeing jsut barely the top of a old hat and two hands on the wheel, rolling at half the speed limit, or honking maniacally. You've captured the essence both tragic and humorous of the aging driver in your image.

21 Sep 2010 3:41am

@Bettina: thx Bettina .

23 Sep 2010 9:24am

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

Comment from Jim :
A perfect photo--a study in excellent composition and the rendering contrasting textures. It incorporates a human face into what is otherwise still a great piece of seeing. The human face is the "hook" that makes us look at the rest of the piece.
