Mutual Ignorance

Canon EOS REBEL XT 1/200 second F/5.0 ISO 400 105 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Sriraam Kalingarayar from Chennai, India

Hmmm... The picture speaks a silent story.. Beautiful... Candid.. Love ur street photography...

This is when one would say "Don't ask, don't tell!"

23 Jul 2010 5:44am

Tom DFR from Paris, France

really nice and interesting shot. It's interesting to analyse the difference between these two people. The boy looks quite strange ^^

23 Jul 2010 5:46am

@Tom DFR: boy was very curious , and did not listen to his grandma . to be honest I did not like him for that !

QB from Canada

People do strange things, even in public. It's refreshing to see that not everyone poses. They're just themselves. Even if it looks a bit weird.

23 Jul 2010 5:48am

PATRICK from miramas, France

just 5*****

23 Jul 2010 5:53am

STEED from Somewhere, France

Strange story and nice picture...

23 Jul 2010 6:19am

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

These images talk to me about solitude. As natural as it is.

23 Jul 2010 6:25am

Nigel from Avening, United Kingdom

As usual the processing is faultless. The indifference of the lady to the boy makes for a lovely scene. Well done.

23 Jul 2010 7:17am

Larry Elkins from Bisbee, United States

Interesting capture of an intriguing scene

23 Jul 2010 7:26am

prarthana from singapore, Singapore

i wonder what the boy is doing! but how appropriate that the woman doesnt wonder the same thing! :-) nice capture.

23 Jul 2010 7:29am

k@ from Paris, France

That's our world in big cities for sure, i see so many of this samples in Paris as we all do in our mute societies, happily in little towns or elsewhere, people talk easier & notice each other better. And in big cities, so many people you couldn't stop at everyone neither ;) I like the kid's attitude a lot, so strange & intriguing, and super that you kept this bike wheel in the frame, it opens it to the outside of the image too, like the woman direction of her eyes, suggesting she's more focus on what is going on far away than so close to her...

23 Jul 2010 7:41am

@k@: Thanks Karine . In fact my story is much more simple - just a curious , stubborn kid who totally ignored what his grandma was saying to him . Grandma got tired and left him alone ;))

pixator from kerman, Iran

Interesting shot!
Well done!

23 Jul 2010 7:47am

Conflict of generation , S ? ;) famous shot again one time , you have the right eye , like always , to catch incredible portraits and scenarios. The city is your kingdom , S :-) Kiss kiss

23 Jul 2010 9:10am

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

the perfect title for this somewhat surreal image. What is he doing one wonders:)

23 Jul 2010 9:15am

@grouser: I was wondering too. Grandma was yelling at him at first, then she just left him alone. There is a rather big hole and boy was curious about something ...who knows , maybe looking for some macro bug ;))

Frida from Sweden

Is he geocaching?? ;-) I just love this image. Almost surreal how they choose to ignore each other.

23 Jul 2010 9:23am

Jaol from Gijon, Spain

Youth versus maturiy, interesting debate; insolence and nerve versus experience and prudence. A picture is worth a thousand words

23 Jul 2010 9:47am

Great title and composition !! *wondering what the boy was doing, taking a nap...must be too tired :)

23 Jul 2010 12:10pm

@Anne: no nap .. there is a big hole, so he is probably trying to see how his head fits this hole ;))

Tamara from Aarschot, Belgium

Very good street capture ! Sometimes people don't even realize how "expressive" they are.
Have a nice day :)

23 Jul 2010 12:26pm

23 Jul 2010 12:33pm

Hiro from Kyoto, Japan

Funny at first glance. But I think it has more meaning behind.

23 Jul 2010 12:44pm

Geneviève Caouette from Québec, Canada

Nice framing, nice contrast, and awesome subject. A reality that is really hard to point out, but you do it brilliantly with this picture. Bravo!

23 Jul 2010 12:45pm

@Geneviève Caouette: thanks a lot . that was really cool scene to me :) poor grandma, she could not do anything about her stubborn boy ;)

Aboololo from Govashir, Iran

Dialogue of the deaf ... there is no dialogue between the grandparents and grandchildren. Or maybe too hard! What is it wiser to hac and the grandmother ... "Yourself" Best regards, Adela

23 Jul 2010 2:23pm

Joan Felix from Jakarta, Indonesia

Excellent !!! thinking what's the boy doing

23 Jul 2010 2:36pm

don from spokane, United States

The massive cement makes a fine background for these to people so detached from each other. The lady's pose is so good. A fine street catch.

23 Jul 2010 2:40pm

MK from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

i wud have let him try to find out for himself first, n later correct him if his assumptions r wrong

23 Jul 2010 2:45pm

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Fabulous shot! I love the boy, putting his head in the fountain. You were fast on that one. The woman's vacant stare into the distance, her feet spread languidly, is perfect. They are completely unaware of each other. It's so excellent and great in black and white. A classic.

23 Jul 2010 2:47pm

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

Yes I agree with Bettina - I had to chuckle as well...if the older gal sees him she is doing a real good job of ignoring it...if she is like me she is probably wondering how to pay the electric bill..either way, another fantastic photo Mariana.

23 Jul 2010 2:59pm

Stéphane Thémèze from PlateFormeRonde, United States

Way too far apart despite the short distance that separate them. Even harder to imagine that they came together anyway just looking at the shot you made. And as I experience it with mine, when a kid is inside himself and is listening to his inner voice, just being a parent is not enough to break away from something you really want to do and that is just reachable just now. We Parents in general tend to do that like breathing, i.e breaking natural rythm in our kids life for the sake of something we've been taught. Too bad for us.
Nice monochrome. A strange scene it is here. An invisible wall dividing two worlds.

G'd Day to you Mariana.

23 Jul 2010 3:03pm

B.Held from Santa Fe, United States

artistic composition ;)

23 Jul 2010 3:06pm

SOUL AFLAME from The bosom of Mother Nature, United Kingdom

A very expressive frame, M. The cycle of life as the generations flower and bloom, then wither away from childhood to adulthood, youth to old age. The older generation lose patience with the young for their foolish ways, exuberence and headstrong attitudes, and yet, once upon a time they too were that little girl or boy with the will to explore and a mind to take no notice of their elders.

23 Jul 2010 3:11pm

Living in a another world this boy and not listened to his grandmother, nice street shot

23 Jul 2010 3:24pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Kids that age have to always be doing something. Poor grandma has tried her best. A great shot of this slice of life. I love that B&W processing.

23 Jul 2010 3:26pm

MAMYNI from Argenteau-Visé, Belgium

Great composition.
A nice shot and humorous title.

23 Jul 2010 3:31pm

Becky from los angeles, United States

Fabulous image and title. It's easy to see here who has the energy to be bothered and who doesn't. I love this about youth - the need to be curious and "out of control" - and love equally the attitude that comes with aging - "oh well".

23 Jul 2010 3:33pm

Saeed from -, Iran

Composition is superb. a nice street shot at all

What is she thinking? That was the first thought of my. People can behave very strange, your title is telling that and your photo is showing that. Another fabulous shot Mariana, compliments from Holland ;-)

Jyoti from Mumbai, India

23 Jul 2010 4:49pm

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

The lad's pose is a puzzle. Listening for the hoof-beats of the horses beneath the posse of men - sworn to bring him to justice? I don't know... Splendid photo, Mariana.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

I think that one has less need for knowledge than the other!

23 Jul 2010 6:36pm

24 Jul 2010 12:21am

Martin from North Platte, United States

enjoyed the message here quite abit, its this type of child that finds out the hard way, that the stove is hot, do not touch,, or is the one with his toung stuck to the flag pole on a frosty morning, call the fire dept. :) some kids listen and learn, some kids live and learn...

24 Jul 2010 12:43am

Stu from Scotland | Living in 京都 Kyoto, Japan

Haha wonderful title for this shot! Really made me laugh!

24 Jul 2010 3:29am

Sonia Nansid from Stockholm, Sweden

Ive read some of the answers so I know its just a hole, but first I thought I was some kind of fountain and the kid was wetting his head.... It makes the shot more surrealistic the fact that he is just exploring the world and that, at that age, no grandmother can stop! Excellent shot!

24 Jul 2010 3:33am

ISO from Bogota, Colombia

Wonderful tones and BW... wow its hot isn´t it?

24 Jul 2010 3:38am
