"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Fabulous shot! I really love this. I've always loved images of industry. There's always so much texture and pattern. Paired here with the starkly bright primary colored McDonalds is fantastic. And then, of course, the hunky man on the street. What a great capture. I just love the colors.

k@ from Paris, France

Great irony of our societies, too much for some, too little for others, if not nothing... Sigh...
Great colors & repetition of the chimneys and i "love" the "Drive thru" too (as if saying to the homeless Go beyond, man, generous life is elsewhere)...
I doubt McDonald would appreciate it as an ad. but it's a meaningful one neverthess that should help them reconsidering their slogan.

16 Jul 2010 7:11am

@k@: totally agree with you . thx Karine .

Richard T from Leicester, United Kingdom

What a great gang of chimneys ... Love the colours in the windows.
Heck I have had just one 'M' burger in my whole life ... what are the chances of me having another ;-)
The guy does nothing for me ... Ha!

So many great facets to this image Mariana ... marvellous

richard

16 Jul 2010 7:13am

@Richard T: Guy means everything to me , Richard . Just imagine, HE is NOT among these 99 Billion Served :)) And behind Mc Donald's , there is this factory with much more who never been served in this famous McDonald's :))

MK from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

16 Jul 2010 7:21am

Ddo from Verdun, France

What a contrast between this man having all propriety in a caddy ans this bigger industry symbol of too much. A good shot of society excess. I like different textures of building too

16 Jul 2010 7:31am

@Ddo: thx Ddo . Yes, that is why I was happy to include this man into frame .

Nigel from Avening, United Kingdom

16 Jul 2010 12:38pm

@Yvon: you really think so ? I do not .

Earl from Salisbury, NC, United States

The industrial setting behind the sign is very fitting to the "99 billion served." Certainly a comment on turning the process of lovingly and skillfully preparing food into a mass-production manufacturing process -- yeah, 99 billion served as America grows unhealthier. Ok, stepping down off my soap-box now. :-)

16 Jul 2010 12:55pm

@Earl: cool comment . thanks .

JJ from Jersey City, United States

So much to see in this the large chimneys the vivid reds and the Man walking by, superb photojournalist shot

16 Jul 2010 1:10pm

SOUL AFLAME from The bosom of Mother Nature, United Kingdom

The sweatshop empire where staff are slaves earning cents per hour, and animals are slaughtered after living a life of hell behind corporate banners proclaiming a squeaky clean and 'healthy' image. The company gets fatter whilst the poor get ignored. This is a brilliant, hard hitting, observant frame, M, and you've hit home hard.

16 Jul 2010 1:30pm

Dawn from Maryland, United States

Oh man. I could go for one of their chocolate milkshakes right now. Gorgeous colors and perfect composition Mariana!!! : )

16 Jul 2010 2:29pm

Don Wiley from spokane, United States

I like the guy on his way to other places. The proximity of McD to the factory seems to fit. McDonalds....the hamburger factory grinding out fatty foods and selling them with toys and little kids demanding the family go to McDonalds! I go there when roped in by friends! :-)

16 Jul 2010 2:34pm

16 Jul 2010 4:54pm

The homeless issue seems to be one part of the shot but there is also that horrid industrial manufactured fast food issue the crops in.

16 Jul 2010 5:04pm

Becky from los angeles, United States

wow - that is a serious Mac Building with all of its pipes of rust and massive amount of windows. Great shot - so much stimuli - and the color fabulous -

Ohhhhh, the picture was of the sign! Haha, them abs really caught my eye! hehe.

16 Jul 2010 7:07pm

Amanda from Jersey City, United States

I am, unlike most commenters here, a fan of McDonalds. I love the food as a cheap and quick way to grab a bite to eat. I remember it as a staple in my childhood--it was the pick up/drop off location for my sister and I to swap parents for a designated time. I even had a birthday party or two at McDonalds when I was a kid. :) Even seeing this image of the golden arches puts a smile on my face because I'm reminded of happy memories. And I think the coroprate story of what started as a small one-location burger joint that turned into one of the most recoginzed brands in the world, is amazing. Obviously I'm not the only McDonalds lover in the world...especially with "billions" sold. :)

16 Jul 2010 7:10pm

Ginnie from Netherlands

And to think that someone made the decision to start counting at the very beginning! (sigh) But it sure is colorful, Mariana.

16 Jul 2010 7:36pm

Devendra from Mumbai, India

Great work!

16 Jul 2010 8:07pm

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

I love how the sign stands out from the long symmetry of windows. I wonder if the guy read the sign on McDonald's door that read, "No shoes, no shirt, no service" and then turned away.

16 Jul 2010 8:15pm

Christel from Köln, Germany

Good evening, Mariana,
Colors and details are excellent in reproduction.
Also here are many restaurants MC Donald and MC Drive. In a city stroll, when I'm in a hurry, I eat there from time to time, cheeseburgers. But it is very rare. Have a nice evening, and all the best. Sincerely Christel

16 Jul 2010 10:04pm

DLee from Fanling, Hong Kong

So much to tell in this shot. The man on the street, the factory, and the big "M" signboard. Love the colours and details!!

I'm one of the 99 milion served and we have McDonald everywhere. Globalization.... It doesn't matter the food quality, the taste... but the kids love it!! They have brilliant advertising strategy.

16 Jul 2010 10:47pm

Sonia Nansid from Stockholm, Sweden

What a mirror! What a mirror this image is! Where we can see so much about ourselves and this society we live in if we dare to look and if we are yet not totally blind to see!
