Finger (gesture)

*

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

@Tede: I actually like having her in this frame . Why not !

Lyl and Roll from Besançon, France

WOW : this finger was for you ?
That's why we prefer animals shooting... They are sometimes less bloody than human...

22 May 2010 7:59am

Stéphane Thémèze from PlateFormeRonde, United States

If it only comes to that, it's kinda ok even though it all brings to mind that privacy is also to be acknowledge. I never had this but had some angry looks and sometimes physical threats which without putting me off too much make you rethink the way street has to be felt and capture in some situations. It is to be remembered that we have als o to feel the situation for our own sake since the law is kinda against that practice in most countries now. That's when communication comes into play whenever possible.

Cheers Mariana. Be safe now.

22 May 2010 8:08am

@Stéphane Thémèze: thanks Stephane ! I am safe , why would not be :))

Ali from Tehran, Iran

22 May 2010 8:14am

It does not emphasize her this gesture !! Too bad for her the photo is now taken and published !!

22 May 2010 8:17am

@Lilly: good for me .. see, I now really like having her in a frame :)

jacques robert from Ath, Belgium

IL semble que tout le monde ne soit pas heureux que tu fasses de la photo !

Un noir et blanc très profond ... très beau !

22 May 2010 8:21am

Henk van Rijssen from Utrecht, Netherlands

much dynamics in this photo.
Wonder if the finger was meant for you, the lens is not directly aimed at her. But when it is, it's indeed the risk of street photography and it should happen once.
Nevertheless an interesting and great photo.

22 May 2010 8:24am

@Henk van Rijssen: Yes, she meant it for me. I even did not want to have her in a compo, but she turned back and saw me ... etc .. It is not a first time I got the same ..even more worse things happened :) Thx Henk .

rainboy from Nainital, India

shot's pretty good. The middle finger made it interesting... lol So did u finger back lol hahaha

So glad you have people like that over there, too. Makes me feel better.

MadScientist from Düsseldorf, Germany

Would be a good illustration for the appropriate Wikipedia article. :-D

22 May 2010 9:52am

@MadScientist: ha ha .. that is a cool shot on Wikipedia :)

JoeB from Brampton, Canada

In one shot there goes the whole notion that Canadians are polite. :)

22 May 2010 9:53am

@JoeB: I would not say - Canadians, I would simply say - people! People are people ; everywhere on this world you see the same people . From my experience , living 13 years in Canada, I cannot tell that Canadians are anything special according politeness ! Just as everywhere else in the world , in countries I visited and spent some time .

Pixator from kerman, Iran

Hard for this comment.
Interestingly, this is my own existence.

22 May 2010 10:25am

22 May 2010 10:30am

Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

This gesture so exquisite and so international I have put a lot of people when I have seen them a photo! I always approached me (after dehacer photo) and ask if they bother much they have done a picture ... usually were astonished you dare! The mine action after the question depends on what I respond! They are quiet and I go pleased to have given a lesson in manners! The difficulties of a teacher who makes pictures! Best regards, friend Mariana!

22 May 2010 11:01am

Larry Elkins from Bisbee, United States

Good capture of the scene Mariana. He probably thought he'd ruined the photo for you. Instead, he just added another level of reality to an otherwise candid composition. Larry

22 May 2010 11:35am

@Larry Elkins: that is a girl . Men would not do that, they would only yell , like two of them yelled yesterday on me ... some drunk guys ! ;)

Larry Lefever from Lititz, United States

Amazing what can be conveyed with one digit. But then, being a mathematician, you already knew that. ;) Enjoy the weekend, Mariana.

22 May 2010 12:37pm

Magrat from Nordhausen, Germany

Haha...! Yes... there are some other kind of gestures, too, it's not always "Peace" & "Thumbs up!"... ;) Great shot, Mariana, I like the contrast and tones a lot! :)

22 May 2010 3:37pm

@Magrat: I do not care so much for this . She is not the only one ... :)) Thx NaDu !

Amir from Luleå, Sweden

Nice exposure.
haha!! The finger actually has become such a key element!

22 May 2010 5:19pm

Larry Elkins from Bisbee, United States

Mariana - I guess I'm old fashioned and thought it was women who would not act like that. Also, I guess I wasn't looking closely. Larry

22 May 2010 7:21pm

k@ from Paris, France

Hoo, a lot of discussion on the subject round here ! Yes, anywhere in the world, we can be seen as agressive as soon as we 'shoot' (just the word itself is already agressive, isn't it ?), that's why i love so much when i can get kind reactions from people i don't know but who smile at my not-announced camera in the face ;) I don't know why this girl is reacting like this, bad day for her, maybe ? .;) The other thing is that 2 or 3 other people in the frame are looking at you, and that's intriguing : were you that visible, or did you shoot something special before she lifted her middle finger ? Anyway, you've got a "real" shot here and i guess it's human to get all the reactions possible since we're all so different (and so the same ;))

22 May 2010 8:38pm

@k@: Hey , Thanks :) I also had no clue, and even was stunned when she turned back and showed me a finger and started taking bad words . Stupid. I even did not want her in my frame, but this one sleeping on a grass. I am trying to be discrete and not to be noticed by anybody. These pictures I like the best !

k@ from Paris, France

(Oh, and i love the word "Echo" that takes so much strengh in the story here as if asking for you to answer her/echo her... as you did, from what i read above ;)))

22 May 2010 8:40pm

@k@: sure, I know to be bad too , when someone is bad to me :)) why not ! he he

Gérard Méry from saint-cyr sur Loire, France

Pas très cool ta photo, un cul en premier et un doigt en l'air plus loin...(rire)

22 May 2010 9:10pm

k@ from Paris, France

Let's be thankful when the unexpected enters our frames, sometimes we get more interesting than we thought. And do you know this girl began very early her finger gesture ? I find a pic of her on the Net for you. Oh, she must have a real problem, prayers for her parents required ;)))) See here !

22 May 2010 10:34pm

@k@: he he ... where did you find this baby ? :))) My girl is probably sleeping with a finger like that , just in case .. :)) As for picture and unexpected things , that is true . I did not expect her finger in a frame, and see - I even titled my picture like that :)) Yesterday I had crazy-lucky day for shooting , on a beautiful early afternoon . Rain and fog today, no one is out . Sunday looks like Hiroshima in Waterloo . Oh, tomorrow is Sunday , not today :))

k@ from Paris, France

I just Googled Photo+insults & found this ;)) Happy you had a super shooting day yesterday, crave to see the result soon. Goodnight (that's for me now ;) & good afternoon for U ~

22 May 2010 10:42pm

@k@: Good night ! See you :)

Lori from Michigan, United States

you never know what will happen do you?!

22 May 2010 10:45pm

@Lori: Right . Many stories while taking pictures I shared with my sons and they told me I will get a broken head one day :)) Well, I wish to see it too ;)

Martin from North Platte, United States

Mariana, exceptional as always and what a flattering concept for this fine lady, Immortalized for all time, your photos always tells a story about someone, with alot of feelings, this one does just the same, She should be so proud of herself:) If she only realized how accomplished a photographer you are, she would have been grateful to grace the front of your lens...

22 May 2010 11:09pm

@Martin: oh...oh.. come on Martin ... they care for nothing .. I mean these kind of people are always ready to fight :)

Dulcie from Danville, CA, United States

Well, I wondered if that ever happened to you.
I am inexperienced with taking candid people-street shots and
do a lot of hiding behind trees, fearing a bad response.
In spite of his gesture, you got a nice B&W image full of people
doing what they do daily in life. Good One, Mariana !

23 May 2010 12:03am

✿ Anina ✿ from Auckland, New Zealand

LOL!!! Sorry for laughing, but I think it's great!!! You caught him red handed! LOL!!! Great shot and good on you for not "backing off" and still taking the shot! I love it!! This is priceless.
(please don't get me wrong... I wasn't laughing at you, I was laughing at the "finger-person". I really like this shot a lot!) Thanks for sharing this shot!

23 May 2010 12:19am

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

I'm sure you gave as good as you got, feisty lady! ;-) It was rude of that lady to do that to a nice photographer. You got a good shot anyway.

23 May 2010 3:35am

Doug from Long Beach, United States

Apparently some people really don't care for being in photos.

23 May 2010 6:25am

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

23 May 2010 2:23pm

Albert from Hamburg, Germany

Haha. The photo is good. I enjoyed reading the dicussions above too...

23 May 2010 7:09pm

Peter from Amsterdam, Netherlands

Lucky you! the shot really gains weight and dynamics, thanks to the lady.

23 May 2010 8:33pm

shoti from somewhere in, China

this is what you get when you happen to be in a place with someone who thinks he/she means a lot to everybody. quite assuming people, I suppose. beautiful catch, though some find it offensive, I find it humorous ;))

24 May 2010 2:17am

Meysam from Montreal, Canada

I also have some finger shots. You are right about girls doing that. Guys just get annoyed! I have a shot of two couples, the two girls are showing fingers and the guys are just surprised (By me or by their girlfriends?!!).
Anyway, at least she is less aggressive than the your infamous Forbidden Portrait.

25 May 2010 3:34am

Amanda from Jersey City, United States

So funny! This is something I have seen in the past as well. :) I can't tell you how many times people get upset when they think I'm taking their picture when they aren't even in my frame at all. But I don't let them in on the secret. ;-)

25 May 2010 8:56pm

Vitor Martins from Lisboa, Portugal

Beautiful, great timing.

27 May 2010 8:41am
