"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

Bettina from United States

Wow. A lifetime of concern and disapproval, perhaps disappointment, has been permanently etched in his face. Great study in character! :)

Deeply impressing photo, this intensively spotted skin. Not only the unibrow is astonishing but also his dense growth of hair, though he must be very old. I join the praise of all your visitors.

k@ from Paris, France

Oh my, what a face, very rare one with those rich eyebrows. I like a lot the narrow crop and this sunny B&W with the car in the blur behind and the light hitting the man's forehead. He seems so deep - in his thoughts, in his pain (to walk maybe ?), an old man full of mystery & stories. The hairy soft pull-over catches the light superbly too.

26 Apr 2010 6:06am

@k@: I was cheating here . He has a strange face, we saw it in last picture with his wife behind, but I zoom in to get his face only , and did not want to include a bus sign with bus schedules that he was intently looking at ! Thx !

Richard T from Leicester, United Kingdom

When I was dealing with the organisation of complex arrangements to get kids packed up and loaded on to transport along with numerous other contigencies at the end of a schoolfield trip many years ago ... I remember a colleague and very good friend coming up to me at a very stressful moment and whispering ''Don't forget to smile richard'' .

For me it was a very valuable bit of advice that I have rememebered and used for over 30 years ... I feel that this guy could do with similar advice.

richard

I didn't even notice the brow until I read the caption.. I just thought that I would not want to be sitting someday and staring into space with the past rushing through my mind... That may not be what is going on here but that is what I thought about.

27 Apr 2010 3:14pm

k@ from Paris, France

Very clever idea, some then thought he was bad temper, i thought he was in his deep thoughts, photo is this : interpretations, and you got as many as you got viewers ! Cool *

27 Apr 2010 5:46pm

@k@: Every face is more interested when not prepared and not staring to the camera with some lovely ( to me always funny) smile :) I just read some discussion on one guy's page on Am3 , where he just started taking candid shots and saying how shy he is and does not have enough courage to ask people for portraits :) If one asks he will never get what he wants :)

k@ from Paris, France

Well i thought this, like you yes, as i loved stolen portraits, but i discovered it's possible to get very interesting portraits not just after asking & disappearing (always bad), but after taking time with people till they feel at ease while you're sharing sincerly with them - a talking, a listening, or just eye-contact & smiles. I'll post some in the weeks to come, you'll tell me what you think of them ~ See U*

In french we would say "une gueule"...I don't know how to translate it...Mean that not a pretty face, not a huggly face, but a so present face...Others "gueules". Jean Gabbin, Lino Ventura, Hitchkock...I you see what I mean...

28 Apr 2010 2:39pm

AnneCphotography from somewhere over the rainbow, France

29 Apr 2010 7:04am
