When everyone turns their back

Canon PowerShot SX100 IS 1/60 second F/2.8 ISO 200 6 mm

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."
~ Andre Kertesz

k@ from Paris, France

Super ! His feelings (deep harsh life boiling in) & the compo with your choice of crop to keep & narrow the image around the man walking away and showing his own back in the background. Very strong that he's not looking at you neither. As if he couldn't be linked anymore neither to the one who alrealy turned his back to him, nor to the one who's facing him. Strong human shot.

I agree with Karine's assessment.
This is special image. There is a special airy and sweet light which illuminates this rather troubled looking face. He is looking beyond you? Does he know he's being photographed? An exceptional shot.

impressive/intimate/expressive portrait

31 Mar 2010 9:20am

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

You capture so much in his face. His eyes are amazingly clear. His look has genuine a gentle grief and quiet outrage, like a person who just cannot understand or accept how harsh and unfair the world can be. And it is hard to understand.

31 Mar 2010 9:33am

@Bettina: beautiful words in this comment, Bettine . Thx a lot :)

A nice and strong portrait. I still doubt whether the right man to be cut

31 Mar 2010 12:20pm

31 Mar 2010 2:54pm

31 Mar 2010 4:49pm

dang from Atlanta, United States

I agree, the second person walks away with head down, intensifying the feeling. Are any beyond the grasp of illness, or poverty? Life is unexpected, and can change in a second. This is a strong statement on the "human condition" being experienced by many, everywhere.

31 Mar 2010 5:42pm

Mark Johnson from Rural Colorado, United States

I see sadness rather than loneliness, but of course one is just a variety of the other. He also looks confused. Great portrait. The man walking away does add to the curiosity of the image.

31 Mar 2010 5:48pm

Susan from Sausalito, United States

He has a beautiful face and those eyes tell stories we do not know about. I want to reach into the photograph and smooth away the kind of...what is it...disbelief ? on his face.

31 Mar 2010 5:53pm

Susan from Sausalito, United States

But then again, how much do we project in a flash of an instant when he might just be looking for his wife in a crowded public place, or have lost his car in the parking lot.

31 Mar 2010 5:54pm

@Susan: that is right , Susan . Funny , I had a chance to talk to him later, and his story is sad too .

1 Apr 2010 10:16am

My English is too limited to speak with subtlety ... but all humanity concentrated in that look, in this portrait universal. A large photograph, in my opinion.

Another very intriguing portrait. There's a lot of character in his face. I'd love to know how you processed this.

7 May 2010 9:07pm

@Russ Devan: Thanks Russ. I feel bad when people ask me how I processed some of my pictures because I do not know what to tell them. I use PS less than 1 year, never learned anything, but followed my instincts while processing :)) For this picture , I was lucky to get very close to this man and get a good compo .
