Hey everyone, after reading your comments I need to add some info :
Shot is not montage or layered as many asked .
That is not shadow after woman . It was overcast day , not sunny .
Marks on the asphalt are not her shadow .

Shot is taken from a car , through open window, but with lot of stuff down on the street that I did not like and REMOVED . I still do not see what many see that stroller is out of place . Did i damage it ?
My attention was on this young woman with covered face , that one cannot see every day on the streets !

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

Luke Wiley from Spokane, United States

The stroller seems a little out of place.

26 Oct 2009 5:10am

@Luke Wiley: complete scene is out of place and out of time, starting with covered face :))

Andrew Gould from Sydney, Australia

Fantastic tones and textures in this strong image.

26 Oct 2009 5:47am

Chris Pereira from San Jose, CA, United States

is this edited? the stroller doesnt seem to cast a shadow. nonetheless, this is a great photo, and i love the composition (having the subject near the edge of the frame)

26 Oct 2009 6:02am

@Chris Pereira: That is not shadow after woman either . but marks on the asphalt ! It was overcast day , not sunny . Shot is taken from a car , through open window, but with lot of stuff down on the street that I REMOVED . I still do not see what many see that stroller is out of place . Did i damage it ?

P J W Miller from Chase Terrace, United Kingdom

I agree with Luke, it looks like it is floating, sems like different eras mixed to produce a very interesting image

26 Oct 2009 6:31am

LESLIE from norwich, United Kingdom

Yes i agree the stroller does look a little out of place, apart from that the rest is great with lovely warm tones

26 Oct 2009 6:32am

Monique from Koh Samui, Thailand

I guess you merged two photo's together ... the woman with stroller and the background? Even without the woman in front, this would make a great photo ... love that old background!

26 Oct 2009 6:58am

Ekios from Une des trois iles du Salut., Guyana

This photo hits me about her timing. I'm at the office right now, with 2 coworkers at the fire security center.

We had a "chit chat" about womens who hide themself that way.

As usual, I got mad at them because, here, in France we are supposed to be Laic. So if something have to be said to this kind of dressing, the same apply to the christian nun fully covered too ...

Ironicly it made an angel pass in the room ... ;)

PS : I would be a liar if I said that it doesn't lock my eyes on when I see a lady dressed that way but still ... as a french laic citizen, it shouldn't.

26 Oct 2009 7:00am

@Ekios: Oh, this would be a theme for long discussion . I only can say - If I visited a country from where this woman is coming , everything would be ok with me . However, this is in Canada,, so I strongly disagree seeing women like this . Look, back in country I never wore a shorts in Summer; here, I wear shorts on a hot summer days , as everybody else . Why not ?

Ben from Lyon, France

Excelent colors and details. :)

26 Oct 2009 9:33am

Une composition toute en harmonie de couleurs. Mais je ne vois pas d'ombre à la poussette, serait-ce un montage ?

26 Oct 2009 10:38am

@Marlowe: thx , no , just one picture with some moderation :))

Crash from Weehawken, NJ, United States

nice blue and green tones .... the stroller looks out of place!

26 Oct 2009 11:55am

MadScientist from Düsseldorf, Germany

This is a collage, no? Wall and wood constructions seem to come from different buildings, the background is two-dimensional, the stroller doesn't cast a shadow... But the colours are matching well! :-D

26 Oct 2009 11:56am

Morten Pedersen from Norway

this one came uot a little strange with the woman and the wagon og here.

26 Oct 2009 12:00pm

Thea from Leeuwarden, Netherlands

It looks as if she is floating a little bit..but the colors and details are stunning enough!

26 Oct 2009 12:32pm

Reno from Madrid, Spain

I like the colours and the composition but yes, I'll say that this stroller is like out of place/time..It gave me the impression that the stroller and this woman are flying.

26 Oct 2009 12:39pm

Eldiablo from Les Issambres, France

Very well done ... great shot !!!!!

26 Oct 2009 12:50pm

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Great shot, you did an excellent job of framing the woman and stroller.

26 Oct 2009 12:56pm

Don from spokane, United States

I don't tend to see the shot in or out of place. The total effect of the covered face and setting seem very effective to me. Fine job of shooting and processing.

26 Oct 2009 1:02pm

@Don: that is exactly what attracted me so much to grab my camera while driving and shot it ... now, I am sorry that I did a bad job removing stones and some fence in front of them . seems that floating stroller is now taking viewers' attention :((

B.Held from Santa Fe, United States

completely stunning!

26 Oct 2009 1:40pm

Michael Skorulski from Cigel, Slovakia

Has to be very rare there. But interesting that women are walking around in Canada like this. Very good capture, Mariana.

26 Oct 2009 2:00pm

Hiro from Kyoto, Japan

I like the texture of the wall. That is as interesting as the woman.

26 Oct 2009 2:07pm

Luca Bobbiesi from Milano, Italy

This scene looks decadent and colourfull in the same time. Great shot.

26 Oct 2009 2:11pm

26 Oct 2009 2:11pm

26 Oct 2009 2:31pm

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

An interesting capture with vivid blues.

26 Oct 2009 2:34pm

shoti from Everywhere in the, Philippines

it looked like you did some heavy editing on this one, like the lady wasn't really there in the first place. after reading the comments, I found out this was the result of heavy sharpening(I guess). nonetheless, it worked for me.

I think the reason why many people, including me, think the woman is not there in the first place, is that the lighting is not even. :)

26 Oct 2009 2:43pm

@shoti: it was very gloomy day, and light was not fortunate . Try to cover these marks on the street behind woman .. impression is different . I do not know - I saw that scene, I shot, edited and to my eyes it looks ok . I even love this shot, having this woman with covered face on this place, matching colors ! I cannot say it was heavy editing... I removed many undesired things !

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Doin' what moms do everywhere!! Dynamite capture. Superb detail. Vivid colors.

26 Oct 2009 3:03pm

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

PS - the stroller is not at all out of place; it is perfect. There is not a mom in the world that doesn't feel a connection with her.

26 Oct 2009 3:05pm

@john4jack: you are my sweetheart - I started worry I did a bad job, although I do not see what many said :))

amirreza from tehran, Iran

nice shot
she is muslim and wear hijab

26 Oct 2009 3:06pm

Dawn from Maryland, United States

The composition is perfect. Love those blue and green tones. It does look like she and the stroller are in 3-D, but I would have never noticed that if I had not read your above comment. I think it looks fine Mariana. It is perfect the way it is. You did not damage it by any means. LOVE IT!!!!!!! ***** ; )

26 Oct 2009 3:08pm

@Dawn: thx Dawn :)) I am so glad you the same as me do not see what many saw :))

vera from Bangladesh

interesting, but why so sharp? a little too much for me, i mean ...

26 Oct 2009 3:09pm

@vera: I do no think it is sharp, but with good contrast only ! thx Vera !

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Oh Mariana; you are always in the top 3 on my blogwatch!!

26 Oct 2009 3:17pm

@john4jack: good :))) tomorrow is another contra theme - Uncovered :))) So, what I did bad here, tomorrow will be fixed ;) ha ha Just do not yell at me :)

ryse from bordeaux, France

Une maman voilée et un bébé camouflé sur fond de rue aux textures diverses et variées.... une jolie réussite en ce qui me concerne.
Bonne journée Mariana

26 Oct 2009 3:20pm

Ashish Sidapara from Singapore, Singapore

Love the high contrast effect, cool!

26 Oct 2009 3:24pm

Stephane Themeze from Maryland, United States

It does look like the stroller is floating inside the photograph. Not a problem from my end since she definitely makes out for the role of the woman of Darth Vader. May the force be with her. Might be the Halloween night coming closer that has me see that way.

Have a good day Mariana.

26 Oct 2009 3:44pm

thami from Morocco

Une combinaison gagnante : voile et pantalon jean ! Excellent traitement de ce cliché hybride " Islam et modernité"...
Bon début de semaine lumineuse!

26 Oct 2009 3:55pm

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

I suppose each culture must set its own standards, but to me this kind of clothing speaks of repression. Yet, the women who must wear these and still choose to go out in public must be strong persons, indeed. This is a powerful photo, MARIANA.

26 Oct 2009 3:55pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

This would seem to be from a different time and place. The stroller tells us she is a modern woman but her dress says the opposite. A very cool capture.

26 Oct 2009 4:26pm

Leslie from Penang, Malaysia

i do see the stroller out of place too...i guess is the flash being too strong :) i remember reading from somewhere too that when the picture looks like could be over sharpened..

nonetheless, the composition is great!! :)

just my 2cents

26 Oct 2009 4:27pm

jean-pierre from romans, France

bonjour Mariana . un quartier plus que populaire , la misère ne semble pas loin . superbe document . bises

26 Oct 2009 4:51pm

fabrizio from rome, Italy

interesting photo I like the contrasts of light

26 Oct 2009 5:20pm

Bill from Pacific Northwest, United States

A very impactful image. I'm glad you chose to make this a color image. The black birka (sp?) contrasts so nicely with the color in the rest of the scene. Love the blue jeans peaking our from under the birka.

26 Oct 2009 5:22pm

Andrei Barbu from Timisoara, Romania

Great scene, excellent composition!

26 Oct 2009 5:31pm

Pierre from Mâcon, France

Your Islamic woman has travelled in Lyon ! I made a similar shot few days ago where she's sitting in a street asking for money with her little boy

26 Oct 2009 5:32pm

@Pierre: thx Pierre . I already looked at your portfolio and could not see it . So I guess it is going to be one of the next shots . Right ?

6ft5 from stockholm, Sweden

great details and colors.

nice colours. good image

26 Oct 2009 6:10pm

Mª Angeles from Barcelona, Spain

Muy buena foto, la verdad es que es bastante dificil ver a alguien con un burka, pero contrasta con la modernidad de llavar un carrito de bebe. Saludos

Benardo from Barcelona, Spain

Impresionante el detalle y los colores de la imagen.

26 Oct 2009 6:30pm

dj.tigersprout from New York City, United States

how very strange!! i certainly posted a comment to this early this morning -- but where has it gone? :) no matter i will try and remember what was typed -- something to the effect of an intriguing mix of textures, and lines with matching blue hues! a veritable and brilliant melange of life, art and urban decay! thanks for letting me know you didn't receive it!! and happy monday to you!!! :) xxx

26 Oct 2009 6:39pm

John Maslowski from Dallas, PA, United States

An interesting shot of this fascinating urban area. The stroller is the first thing that catches ones eye and then you noticed the decaying structure. Definitely a curious composition.

26 Oct 2009 6:44pm

Lyl and Roll from Besançon, France

Great picture with a strong message... I like the blues in it...

26 Oct 2009 7:44pm

Ginnie from Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Apart from the intriguing juxtaposition of the past culture (covered face...which is still present culture, too, for some people) and the very current baby stroller, they do look like they're floating on the page in 3-D, Mariana. Sometimes photography does that!

26 Oct 2009 8:08pm

Willem from Noord-Scharwoude, Netherlands

Perfect details and colors.

26 Oct 2009 8:11pm

Zeinab from Tehran, Iran

Powerful messege and photo... I love your job. Well done Mariana

26 Oct 2009 8:14pm

bluechameleon from Vancouver, Canada

Great colours in this shot and nice capture. The traditional dress I always find intriguing.

26 Oct 2009 8:20pm

Mike from United States

I love this torn up place. Such great colors. This woman is a surprise here, for me. I still never understand how you find so many different types of people. Fantastic.

26 Oct 2009 8:27pm

@Mike: ok, it is time to tell you my secret :)) Mike, go to the Market on Saturdays; go to the International Food Stores ... There, in front of these kind of stores stay only 20 minutes , you will get at least 20 interesting faces , interesting moments :))) I am not kidding ... :)) Hugs !

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

Well, I took the trouble to read all 80+ comments on this one so won’t mention the . . at all. The debate about whether cultures should display their preferences in another land can lead to riots here so I better not mention that either. But I do like the way you have caught a kinda disturbing feeling in this and . . yup, love that little green chair.

26 Oct 2009 8:45pm

@Ronnie 2¢: the .. the floating strollers :)) haha .. thx for not mentioning :) ..hey, talk your mind :)) See I say freely - I do not like to see women with face covered like this, not here in Canada . I grew up in Sarajevo, ex- Yugoslavia ( now city that belongs to Bosnia) with 50 % of Muslim friends but never ever saw anybody covered or with covered face . First time I saw it in real here in Canada ... and not so often.. this girl is maybe 10th time I saw it like that, and that is why I thought it would be a cool idea to shot . .... rare, weird , not so often seen ...

roy from ostend, Belgium

weird pictures,
that woman with her cloth to her face, and the background ;-)

26 Oct 2009 9:04pm

Veronelle from Lens, France

26 Oct 2009 9:07pm

Philipp from Munich, Germany

well done mariana :)

26 Oct 2009 9:16pm

Fritsch from Berlin, Germany

The covered is always more interesting. The secret hides & likes to be discovered by our minds. Great shot, Mariana! By the way I love that green chair. All the best & safe travels, Fritsch.

26 Oct 2009 9:22pm

@Fritsch: and face too ? I do not think so :))) woman has to be seen . Her beauty is in her face, her smile .

philippe from moselle, France

belle capture, des couleurs très vives et une façade très graphique donne à la photo une vision surréaliste ,
bien vu !!!

26 Oct 2009 9:23pm

Gérard Méry from Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire, France

Une intéressante composition, chargée de symboles aux fortes couleurs

26 Oct 2009 10:00pm

Bishop from Houston, United States

Well, I think if people are given a choice to adhere to their customs where ever they are it is fine with me... who am I to say what culture is superior to others?! Anyway, it is an unsettling shot due to the lack of shadows - I'm not sure if I like being "not grounded"! :)

26 Oct 2009 10:17pm

pernilla from Andonno, Italy

Interesting capture. She seems to be so out of place (don't mean the thing with the stroller...). A picture that makes me think. Very well seen and captured!

26 Oct 2009 10:26pm

Michael from Shell village, United Kingdom

I find myself agreeing with many of the other comments, but it is still a unique street shot !

26 Oct 2009 11:18pm

@Michael: thanks Michael . I think I am finally opening my eyes and seeing that too . When look at original shot it looks different with fence and some stones in front . I like it though .

Blackdog from London, United Kingdom

LOL - I have read your intro and some of the comments - I can see what they mean. Something in your processing has caused the disconnect and put the stroller into another reality.

26 Oct 2009 11:23pm

@Blackdog: i cannot wait for another day and another picture .. and it is going to be opposite of this - uncovered ;))

Paul from Singapore, Singapore

like the bits of blues in the picture.
interesting street shot!

26 Oct 2009 11:32pm

Lynn from United States

Great shot...there is so much diversity in the world!!! I guess it's the way we are brought up and our cultural background has a lot to do with how we dress and how we act. Nice contrast :))

26 Oct 2009 11:33pm

@Lynn: thx Lynn . I agree !

Vitor Martins from Lisboa, Portugal

Superb composition. Great colors and tones.

26 Oct 2009 11:34pm

Brian Chen from Seattle, WA, United States

Nice composition and colors, but i would have to agree with some that since there are no shadows it doesnt look very natural with the stroller. Maybe it has to do with the removal of some of the things you were talking about, but over all it has a very original feel that i havent seen with other photos.

26 Oct 2009 11:57pm

Ajay from Pune, India

This happens sometimes. May be because of the angle that something looks out of space. The cart is looking like it is in air. But as one can see you have a great observation.

27 Oct 2009 1:30am

akarui from Kagoshima, Japan

When it is cold like in your country now it could be OK to let only the eyes outside but when it is hot it looks more like a silly tradition. Also not beeing able to see people expressions could be very boring... Men and women should be equal.

27 Oct 2009 1:32am

rian from mobile, United States

um, well it does seem like the mother with the stroller was out of place in that scene.. maybe because of the absence of shadow?

27 Oct 2009 2:43am

Michael Rawluk from Williams Lake, BC, Canada

That is wonderful in every way. 5*

27 Oct 2009 4:10am

it's true that the lady would go out of the picture! nice processing i've seen!

27 Oct 2009 4:22am

uvaraj from New Jersey, United States

what more can I say after 103 comments ? As always, great compo and amazing work with minimal colors and subtle tones.

27 Oct 2009 4:30am

Marcie from Newton, United States

Excellent street image. Love the balance of color in this.

27 Oct 2009 11:39am

Linda from Riga/Sigulda, Latvia

a great street portrait, excellent background with its own story for this shot

27 Oct 2009 12:04pm

David Nos from Barcelona, Spain

Lovely colours, the scene is very interesting.

27 Oct 2009 1:13pm

`Paul from Minneapolis, United States

wonderfully done.. the Muslim woman and her stroller walking past a less-than-extravagant scene.. i love the candid nature and cultural component of this. colors, compo, subject, processing -- seriously good!

27 Oct 2009 2:43pm

dabbler from Minneapolis, United States

absolutely a great capture - I wonder if by removing other items the stroller seems, to me, is floating... nonetheless, a fantastic and meaningful shot!

27 Oct 2009 9:42pm

Seraphine from San Francisco, United States

the stroller looks like it is floating!
and why not, there is a green chair
that also looks unreal. the effect is
wonderfully surreal. love it!

28 Oct 2009 1:29am

Earnest from Oklahoma, United States

Hi, Mariana, it has been a long day for me sorting out my photos (I should have started with a better system) and I really like the picture but to me and my tired eyes it looks like the baby carriage is floating above the street... although on very close examination -- it is easy to see that it is not. Perhaps it is because of the texture of the surface against a very sharply defined object... I think this photo works in a way you hadn't intended but it works! :)

28 Oct 2009 3:51am

Francesc B. from région parisienne, France

I like your composition... the contrast and colors...
Damage it ??? no... But the absence of shadow after your retouch disturbs my eye .... the stroller seems to float...
Finally, it adds a surrealist "touch" to this colorful pic ...

28 Oct 2009 3:05pm

Tomix from landerneau, France

all is said...but i like the frontage!

28 Oct 2009 4:06pm

Une très belle photo où se croisent les traditions et la modernité!
Belle journée.

29 Oct 2009 9:35am

Aurore from Paris, France

Be careful woman, the stroller won't pass the door. But it seems to be a magical stroller flying over the floor.
