Hey Guys, Whassup?

Posted by
Mariana Maoduš (Waterloo, Canada) on 4 October 2009 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

I saw these guys right across the Reception House, a house where newcomers to Canada are provided by first and essential services.
None of them speak English , so I guess they just arrived . Guys, have a bright and happy future in Canada!

"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

Superb picture Mariana, as usual ... impressive emotions especially for me.

Good luck guys, really, good luck, and never leave, it's probably the last good place on earth :)

O Canada ... our home and native land ..

4 Oct 2009 8:22am

@Ekios: you are so sweet Ekios :)) This is so touching what you write here. 12 years ago I was also sitting on that bench, without speaking English, without knowing anything what life I can expect in Canada. I left great life behind in my ex-country and it was a beginning for me , as a single mom with two small kids. Was not easy at all leaving it all behind , only because somebody decided to make a war in my ex-country and force us to run away from there , to search for a new life in some far away countries . My very good friends are now everywhere in the world, many died during the war.

'Paul from Minneapolis, United States

... i re-visitied this photo after looking at it several days ago... it's touching, and gives a feeling of togetherness, as if they are all in their Canadian immigration journey together. This shot reminds me a lot of what I see in my city here - groups of Ethiopians, Somalians, Hmong, Chinese, immigrating or escaping, and have nothing but each other to lean on. .. .. then, your text to Ekios... I think you have depth and many stories to tell of courage and survival. .bravo to you.

14 Oct 2009 2:56pm

@'Paul: you know - I was happy seeing them all together. and I know they all arrived together, for nobody spoke English :)) As you say - in a new country we have nothing but each other to lean on .... If only I had my husband with me then, 12 years ago ... But, no .. I was so frightened 12 years ago when came with little twins to Canada, with so much fresh memories of my husband, sis and father who lost their life back in Sarajevo ... thx Paul ! Maybe you noticed how much I am oriented to people .... almost all my photos are about them ...

'Paul from Minneapolis, United States

.. heart-wrenching story you have written here. .. admirable, courageous, strong, brave, resilient. . .. yes, i can see most of your photos contain people in warm settings with happiness. keep sharing, keep on going.
