"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

@'Paul: Thanks Paul . Yes, the subject matter of this shot is very sad, but picture cannot be always of the lovely , sweet things to make a picture nice . Sometimes people forget to take a look at the picture as a picture and its quality, but always looking for some funny, lovely subject matter :)) Many thanks !

Scott from San Antonio, United States

Well done Mariana!
She's a beautiful fowl even in death.
I can see that it has been well received by your viewers, and I am pleased with that as well!
Life is but a dream dreaming itself, continually sleeping and waking, which reminds me of Hamlets' soliloquy;

"To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream..."

22 Sep 2009 3:02pm

@Scott: wow, this is amazing what you say , Scott. That is exactly my first thought when spotted this poor duck . I was so sure it was just sleeping, with its check in a water . When came closer I did not want to believe it was dead, it looked pretty even then . Tanks for following my little story !

Very nicely done as a photograph. As a look at life and death, a sad shot. Hey... some photos are supposed to be sad, right! Great job!

22 Sep 2009 3:42pm

@Mike: Thanks Mike ! Sure, some photos need to be sad . My favorite photos are portrait of poor people, their poverty, their hard life; There are no more sad pictures of pictures of hungry kids, dirty, almost semi-naked in their miserable and sad life !

it is sad, no doubt. i was a little shaken when i saw you posted a dead goose. Yet, she's lovely and sleeping and perhaps she was sick, but now she's not anymore (or maybe it's a him?) Anyway, it's a beautiful image, the green water makes it look a little more solemn. I don't find this offensive in the least. It's simply a part of life. Thanks for being bold enough to post it. :)

It's part of the life cycle, as we all know, Mariana, but we don't often see it like this, especially with such a beautiful duck. The lighting is actually hopeful, for some reason.

Death comes to us all as a reminder of our mortality. For many faith traditions, death does not have the final say. Thanks to your photo, many around the world have seen the beauty of creation as it should be, and felt the sorrow the death of this one goose brings.

24 Sep 2009 10:31pm

@Howard F.: Thanks Howard for your visit and comments . Yes, that was a very first time I saw a dead goose on Columbia lake . Who knows what happened . Very sad for me too. In a winter I see many dead seagulls, but even then never see dead goose or duck .

I wonder why we don't see such situations much more often. Nobody thinks that ducks or geese live eternally, so a lot of effort is taken to spare us views like this (though they are totally normal, I think). Does the absence of death (or even the memory of it) make us better humans?
