"The moment always dictates in my work. What I feel, I do. This is the most important thing for me. Everybody can look, but they don't necessarily see. I never calculate or consider; I see a situation and I know that it's right, even if I have to go back to get the proper lighting."

The lunatic is on the grass

Although there are so many flowers in the forground but it's a very sad shot , I think as you whish ...
as usual impressive .

22 Jun 2010 6:09am

Dulcie from Danville, CA, United States

The flowers only serve to point up the apparent discomfort or malaise of the man...
it seems sad to me, but it is another of your unusual and poignant street shots, Mariana !!

Great! Song and image. I love the selective focus, the table, the flowers, and the-- well no, that's in your head. :)

22 Jun 2010 6:46am

k@ from Paris, France

Very intense feeling of despair behind the glass, and the focus over the flowers are the touch of hope as if if we could escape our own brains sometimes Life would seem a little easier and smiling, maybe ? Anyway, a strong & poignant portrait for sure.

22 Jun 2010 7:00am

@k@: Who knows, easier or not . Will see :)) thx Karine !

Peter from Amsterdam, Netherlands

The man is contemplating his summerflowers and you caught him with your new camera. The result a beautiful Doisneau like photo!

22 Jun 2010 7:06am

@Peter: this is a woman . and my new camera ( ha ha ) - it really has nothing to do with pictures I'm taking . Many times I find my small one more quick and appropriate and I look for it in my handbag, leaving this big, heavy one :)

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Great composition, very hard! The blur on the figure of the woman is the key of the image, for me.

22 Jun 2010 7:13am

Good song I love Pink Loyd! I love the setting of the gesture of the person at the bottom of the picture! Absorbed in the contemplation of his past ... or flowers! I love this picture Marina! Good morning! Adela

@Fonts: many thanks Adela !

impressionnant voyage...tout une vie à remonter pour revenir à l'origine avant qu'il ne soit trop tard...

Ah... yes, Pink Floyd... a moody scene... somehow sad, and dark... this person in the back (man? woman?) seems to be deep in thoughts. Memories... Great one, Mariana... Wish you a nice day!

A great and selective focus in this nice b/w picture.

22 Jun 2010 2:07pm

Henk van Rijssen from Utrecht, Netherlands

suggestive. The photo is strong for that what you don't see, but imagine (it's in your head).
The contrast between the out of focus figure in the back, who gives the impression of sadness and the flowers (joy, hope) in the front makes it an intriguing photo

22 Jun 2010 2:25pm

@Henk van Rijssen: yes, it is rather sad, especially for me seeing this woman from time to time in a city, in always the same mood .

Sonia Nansid from Stockholm, Sweden

I love it! Its quite open the many interpretations. First I get a feeling of despair, the flowers of a new spring bloming and a very adult human in his own thoughts. But then, being as I am, I always distrust my own preconceptions. Who am I to judge someone's true feelings, their state of happiness or unhappiness by their appearance? Maybe this woman is happier than me.

22 Jun 2010 2:55pm

@Sonia Nansid: Thanks Sonia ! I am very similar to you . I do not like to judge people I see on pictures, hey, this is just a picture..an instant when the happiest person on the world can make some expression to look silly, sad, mad .. .etc . That is why I avoid writing any description of my pictures, I do not want to help anybody with any writing ! What you see, if like, say it! It is interesting to read other people impression . For this woman, the same as for many other characters I already have in previous pictures I know much more than from this single picture. Waterloo is rather small city - we know each other ! Thanks for your thought !

Val37 from Tours, France

Little sadness, I like it !

Good evening, Mariana,
It is very sad and dark. The older lady in the background, seems to be thoughtful. The flowers in the foreground, the bright spot in this presentation. Have a nice evening and all the best. Thanks for your nice comments. Sincerely Christel

i really like your composition here in mysterious fashion!

22 Jun 2010 11:20pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

The dark rings around her eyes and the expression makes ma a little nervous. I think I'll just keep on walking. The bright flowers make a nice counterpoint to the to the lady's dark thoughts( at least the dark thoughts, I imagine). A powerful image, Mariana.

23 Jun 2010 12:23am

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

An interesting and thought-provoking capture. The wrought iron here seems to take on the look of a "lock up."

La dame semble perdue dans ses pensées en voyant ces fleurs. Bon mercredi Mariana.

Susan from Sausalito, United States

You do tell stories with your photographs and I agree that we are mirrors to our own selves when we interpret them.
This is quiet and thoughtful, and because she is older does not necessarily mean she is sad or depressed or in despair.

23 Jun 2010 4:52pm

Ciprian from Hungary

You've got great talent. Congratulation!

23 Jun 2010 5:16pm

@Ciprian: hey , thx a lot . I love your pics too. I put you in my fav list !

J'aime énormément cette photographie très forte, très très forte.

24 Jun 2010 9:58am

Dutch from Chicagoland, United States

It could carry sadness, reflection, loneliness or just looking at the flowers and enjoying them. I think the good point about a portrait like this is it can be interpreted to mean many things, that gives it a timelessness.

25 Jun 2010 3:32am

The lunatic has always been in my head -- but a happy one. Great shot....

25 Jun 2010 1:57pm

Interesting - I don't see a lunatic here but a lady deep in thought while looking at the beautiful flowers. But I do like the Pink Floyd song!
